Mountain Empire accepting applications for 9th annual Mountain Music School

BIG STONE GAP — For all who yearn to flay a fiddle, acquire a traditional groove on a guitar, or desire to hone those and other musical skills, Mountain Music School at Mountain Empire Community College has the perfect summer remedy.

MECC’s 9th annual Mountain Music School is accepting applications for the on campus event set for July 22-26.

Folks from age 10 and up can immerse themselves in a week dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian musical heritage and culture. Students enrolled in the popular summer soiree can learn to play an instrument of their choice including beginning and advanced options in old-time fiddle, claw hammer banjo, folk guitar, autoharp, Carter style guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, autoharp, shape note singing and doghouse bass.

Mountain Music School also offers a string band class for intermediate and advanced musicians.

A limited number of instruments are available on loan during the week. The public is also welcome to free daily concerts and workshops. Performances will be featured at 1 p.m. in the Goodloe Center followed by instructional workshops from 2-3:15 p.m.

The 1 p.m. free concert offerings include Papa Joe Smiddy on July 22, Rita Quillen and the Rock House String Band on July 23, the White Top Mountain Band on July 24, and Dale Jett and Hello Stranger on July 25.

Workshops will include Carter Family Style Guitar, taught by Rhodyjane Meadows, July 22-July 25; dance instruction by Anndrena Belcher July 24-25; shape note singing instructed by Kathy Qualls July 22 and 24; and voice and singing instructed by Janie Dixon July 23 and 25.

Registration for the 9th Annual Mountain Music School is $150, a fee that includes lunch each day and a T-shirt. Classes will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. through the week. Scholarships are available for students 18 and younger. To register or apply for a scholarship visit www.mountainmusicschool.org.
