A scavenger hunt and a self-guided historical tour, “Take a Walk Through Time,” can both be done at your leisure throughout the nine-day festival.
You can pick up a map for the tour or the photos for the scavenger hunt at the Kingsport Public Library, 400 Broad St., or at the Fun Fest Store inside the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce, 400 Clinchfield St. in downtown Kingsport.
Members of the Archives of the City of Kingsport are organizing these two events and assembling historic photos and information for the activities. The Downtown Kingsport Association is sponsoring the $100 prize for the scavenger hunt.
In the scavenger hunt, participants will use photos of different architectural features and places in town as a guide and log the locations as they travel to them.
After finding and recording each one, they will submit their responses to the Fun Fest Store or to the library. The deadline to submit responses is Saturday, July 20.
When the results are tallied, a winner will be chosen at random from all the accurate submissions.
In “Take a Walk Through Time,” folks can follow a map to 25 locations, read the signs in store fronts and learn about the history of the buildings.
The walk gives visitors and locals a chance to see the changes that have taken place and the way the city has developed.
Some locations along the tour include the Progress Building, the now vacant State Theater, the former Strand Theater, which is now the Lamplight Theater, and the former Bank of Kingsport Building, which is now a law firm.
The library opens at 9 a.m. and will be distributing the guides daily.
