On Saturdays, it seems everyone comes to Fro-Z-Yo

“Let’s get some frozen yogurt,” said my dining partner as we were leaving the clothing store.
“Yes, yes, by all means,” I responded absently.
It was a typical Saturday. We’d already done an hour of her shopping for outfits various, (bearable), followed by another hour of finding the right pair of shoes to go with each selected outfit, (not bearable). Tired and hot, I was ready for something cold and sweet.
“How about Fro-Z-Yo here?” said my partner, “It looks popular.”
“Yes, indeed,” I said, noticing that three of the four primary-colored tables outside Fro-Z-Yo’s front door were already occupied.
“Yep, looks popular, all right. Let’s give ’em a try, shall we?”
I’d spotted a group of eight shoppers heading in our direction, and thought it best for us to get ahead of the crowd. Once through the door, we were greeted by two smiling servers who invited us to check out the flavors down the wall.
Fro-Z-Yo’s flavors were arranged alphabetically on the blackboard behind the counter, listing from banana pudding to white chocolate mousse. They included some intriguing numbers, like Lemon Ice Box and Blue Cotton Candy, along with a couple of sorbets and a sugar-free vanilla. There are all sorts of toppings from Reese’s Peanut Butter crumbles to nonpareil sprinkles, to sugared pecan pieces, to gummi bears. Sauces included Ghirardelli’s incomparable Caramel, Dark Chocolate and White Chocolate, among many others.
After a couple of sample tastes, the two of us each grabbed a bowl off the counter and made our selections. For starters, I chose Caramel Pretzel yogurt, then followed it up with Double Chocolate, my bowl being capacious enough to easily contain up to 16 ounces of frozen delight. A squirt or two of Ghirardelli’s Caramel topping, plus a liberal sprinkling of some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup crumbles and crushed Heath Bars completed my creation.
My partner’s choices were equally unique: White Chocolate Mousse, Strawberries & Cream and Chocolate yogurt flavors. There were fresh-sliced strawberries to go with her Strawberries & Cream, and chocolate chips for the rest of it, but no squirts.
Fro-Z-Yo follows the current trend at frozen yogurt and ice cream shops of paying by the ounce, in this case just 49 cents per. After settling up, we looked around for a place to sit. All the booths inside were occupied, mostly with young couples and families. The tables outside were still fully engaged. This left the large sectional sofa that was facing the flat-screen TV, so that’s where we sat. The TV had what looked like an 1980s action flick playing, but I couldn’t be sure since the Fro-Z-Yo folks had the music turned up — also 1980s-era from the sound of it.
Comfortably seated, my dining partner and I dug into our creations. My Double Chocolate was excellent; lots of chocolate flavor and a cacao rating that was in the 50 percent range. The Caramel Pretzel flavor tasted exactly like a salty pretzel dipped in caramel sauce. My partner found the salt taste off-putting, but I thought it a pleasant balance to the normally cloying sweetness of the caramel yogurt/caramel topping combination. My Double Chocolate went well with my chosen toppings, and my dining partner concurred.
Her White Chocolate Mousse was smooth and flavorful. But for me, the Strawberries & Cream flavor was the best of our selections, especially topped with fresh strawberry slices. You could taste springtime in each bite.
Fro-Z-Yo has a party room in the back that can accommodate a goodly number of guests. They match all competitors’ coupons and offer a 20 percent discount to college students with ID.
Fro-Z-Yo has set aside Thursday night as Kid’s Night, where kids can get a free cup and a handicraft. They also donate a portion of each ounce sold to area schools, nonprofits and mission organizations.
As we were finishing, Fro-Z-Yo was starting to fill up with customers of every stripe. I spotted families with children, older couples, young adults, teens on a date, even a city commissioner in the bunch.
Just like my dining partner and I, everyone was looking for some creamy-cold sweetness on a Saturday, and all found it at Fro-Z-Yo.
