Senior Services ‘On the Ball’: Senior Services at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., invites those 50 and older to improve balance and strength in a fun atmosphere using a stability ball. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment as availability of exercise mats and stability balls will be limited. Classes cost $2 and will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Fridays throughout February. Soccer coaches and officials needed: Johnson City Parks and Recreation is seeking soccer officials and soccer coaches for the 2018 spring season of the youth league.

• Officials: Those interested must be 16, able to pass a background check, and knowledgeable on soccer rules. Apply at the Winged Deer Park Athletic Office before Sunday, Feb. 25. There will be a soccer officials meeting at 5:30 p.m. on March 14; the season begins April 9.

• Coaches: Volunteer candidates must be over 18, able to pass a background check, well organized, and knowledgeable of the sport. Practices begin March 17 and the 10-game schedule begins April 9. There will be a coaches meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the Winged Deer Park Athletic Office.

Campbell to speak on ‘A Sense of Place’: “A Sense of Place: Ecology, Community and the Human Spirit” is the topic of the first of four free public lectures offered this spring at East Tennessee State University by Dr. Liam Campbell, chairholder of the 2018 Wayne G. Basler Chair of Excellence in the Arts, Rhetoric and Science. In this lecture, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, Campbell will explore the sense of loss experienced by the human spirit when there is a loss of identity with place.This free public talk will begin at 7 p.m. in Ball Hall, room 127.
