Actors from the historic Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., will take the stage for a special holiday performance for the nonprofit One Acre Cafe Wednesday evening, Nov. 29.

The featured performers for the cafe’s annual fundraising dinner, the actors will present guests with a preview of Barter’s 2018 season followed by a performance of Irvin Berlin’s classic holiday tunes from the famed stage production “White Christmas.”

Admission is a suggested $40 donation that includes a festive, locally-sourced meal prepared by the cafe’s own professional chef and staff.

One Acre Cafe Executive Director Michelle Watts said the event will not only provide guests an opportunity to enjoy a great meal and some unique professional entertainment, but also a chance to learn more about One Acre Cafe’s vision of community members dining together regardless of their means, supporting one another and strengthening their community.

All proceeds from the holiday dinner show will be used by One Acre Cafe to help provides= a place for everyone to eat a delicious and nutritious meal, regardless of their ability to pay.

Now in its fourth year, One Acre Cafe has served approximately 72,000 meals, including 15,000 individuals who have worked at the cafe in exchange for their meals. Its Kids Eat Free program has provided over 2,700 free meals to children who eat at the cafe and 3,600 meals to children who take part in Carver Recreation Center’s after-school program. More than 1,500 volunteers have donated more than 34,000 hours of service to the cafe.

Amy Stout, One Acre’s first co-op student, completed the cafe’s work-training program, went on to become at the cafe’s chef and to provide nutritious cooking classes to underprivileged children and their families served by the cafe.

Wednesday’s annual fundraising dinner at the cafe will begin 6 p.m. The Barter actors will take the stage immediately following dessert. Reservations are required. Tickets may be purchased at the cafe at 603 W. Walnut St. or reserved by credit card by calling the cafe at 423-483-0517.

Coalition for Kids gearing up for its annual Shopping for Others outing for up to 150 of its neediest of its children.

A huge event that takes place a few weeks before every Christmas, the Shopping for Others project is designed to give children an opportunity to experience the true meaning of Christmas and the joy of giving.

With sponsorship donations from the community, each child receives $100 in cash for a whirlwind shopping trip with a volunteer chaperone to help them fill a short list of critically needed items — an outfit of clothing, shoes and a coat — one toy for themselves, and one gift for someone they love.

The event provides a creative way to ensure the children get the things they truly need as well as enjoy the blessing of giving to others at Christmas.

The grand night of shopping is set this year for Tuesday evening, Dec. 12, at Walmart on Browns Mill Road, the coalition’s longtime Shopping for Others host.

For those who wish to be a part of the very special night of shopping, sponsorship donations earmarked for “Shopping for Others” may be made by mail to Coalition for Kids, P.O. Box 3156, Johnson City, TN 37601 or online at coalitionforkids.org.

Shopping chaperone applications are also available at the website and must be submitted by Dec. 5 by email to cyoung@coalitionforkids.org, by fax to 423-434-9998 or by mail to Coalition for Kids, 2423 Susannah St., Johnson City, TN 37601.
