A sign of things to come?

Johnson City building officials say the application process continues for permits to renovate a former Food City at the intersection of West Market Street and North State of Franklin Road for a Publix Super Market. Jim Sullivan, Johnson City’s chief building official, said Tuesday the city and Publix officials were “still going back and forth on design revisions” for the project.

Publix announced last year it plans to open a 45,000 square-foot grocery store in the old Food City building. The grocery chain, which is headquartered in Florida, operates 41 stores in Tennessee, including one in Greeneville.

Meanwhile, a green sign recently appeared in front of the new Publix location in Johnson City stating: “Your new favorite supermarket hasn’t opened yet.”
