Daniel Boone girls basketball players made their way through an enthusiastic crowd of students and other supporters Tuesday morning on their way to loading vans headed for the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament in Murfreesboro.

The Lady ’Blazers, who captured Big 7 Conference, District 1-AAA and Region 1-AAA championships, qualified for the state by defeating Oak Ridge 62-51 last Saturday night in the sectional round. Boone coach Travis Mains was appreciative of the support other students showed to this team.

“It’s special. These kids deserve this,” Mains said. “They’ve worked hard for it. So we’re just going to go down there and see what we can do.”

Boone (30-4) got a tough first-round matchup against Bradley Central (32-0), a team which beat the Lady ’Blazers 56-43 back on Nov. 25. While Mains called the Lady Bears’ Rhyne Howard the best player in the state, he is fine with the matchup. After all, no one expects any easy games at the state tournament.

“Everybody down there is good,” Mains said. “We’ve played them and we feel like we match up with them really well. The team that shoots the ball better will probably win. We want to get some shots up and come back here with some hardware.”

Another local school, Unaka (27-9) will play Wartburg Central (23-7) Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Class A girls’ tournament.
