Wofford thwarts ETSU comeback in SoCon tourney

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Andrew Orzel’s double in the 10th inning drove in the winning run as Wofford beat East Tennessee State 8-7 in the opening round of the Southern Conference baseball tournament Wednesday night at Fluor Field.

The Bucs, seeded sixth, had rallied from a 7-2 deficit before falling to 27-24. They’ll take on seventh-seeded Furman in an elimination game Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The Paladins fell 4-0 to No. 2 Samford.

Third-seeded Wofford takes on Samford at 7:30 p.m.

ETSU shortstop Chris Cook had three hits, giving him 307 for his career and tying Paul Hoilman’s school record. An infield single in the ninth inning allowed him to tie Hoilman, who got his hits from 2008-11.

Wofford got home runs from McClain Bradley and Orzel to improve to 36-21.

Wofford starter Adam Scott came into the tournament as the league’s strikeout king and he certainly didn’t relinquish his crown. Scott struck out 13 batters in seven innings before his bullpen blew the lead.

Scott, who came into the game with 124 strikeouts in 96 innings, had 10 strikeouts through the first five innings. He wound up throwing 112 pitches, 81 for strikes.

ETSU’s Cade Gilbert had two run-scoring hits and Cook drove in another run. Jackson Greer’s two-run homer keyed a three-run eighth inning as the Bucs got to Wofford reliever Anthony Garcia.

The Bucs made it 7-6 in the ninth inning on Christian Bailey’s RBI single and got the tying run on a wild pitch.

Orzel’s winning hit came off of reliever James Giambalvo after a two-out error put a runner on base.

Earlier Wednesday, ninth-seeded Western Carolina stunned No. 1 UNC Greensboro 10-2. It was only the ninth victory of the season for the Catamounts, who have 45 losses and had to win a play-in game over The Citadel to make the main draw.

No. 5 Mercer also rolled past No. 4 Virginia Military Institute 19-0 in seven innings.
