What types of ads can be placed online?

Any type of classified ad, except employment can be placed online. To place an employment ad please call 423-929-7355 or email classifieds@johnsoncitypress.com

How much is an ad?

The cost varies depending on the number of lines used and the type of ad that is run.

How many words are on a line?

There are an average of four to six words per line. However, this also varies depending on the number of letters in the words. It can also vary based on the size of the letters in the word. For example, iii takes up less space than MMM.

Are there special rates?

Yes, we do have several specials that are available in certain classes:
FREE ads, yes that's right, we run some ads for free.
The criteria for free ads is as follows:

  1. Merchandise priced under $1,000. All ads must contain a price and be 20 words or less.
  2. 1 item per ad, unless it is a set for 1 price, for example; Dining Room Suite with 6 chairs $600.
  3. Limit of 5 free ads per HOUSEHOLD per month.
  4. Private Party ads only (No businesses)
  5. Ads may take up to 14 business days to appear in print.
  6. Free ads MAY NOT be placed or renewed via telephone or walk in. All ads must be:
    1. Placed via johnsoncitypress.com
    2. Dropped off at our office at 204 West Main Street, Johnson City, TN
    3. Mailed to P.O. Box 1717, Johnson City, TN 37605
    4. Emailed to freeads@johnsoncitypress.com
    5. Faxed to 423-929-9097
  7. Ads for pets/animals, cars, boats, motorcycles, anything with a motor, firewood, fuel, services, etc..do not quality.
If a customer would like to phone in, walk in or place a merchandise ad and have it run sooner than 14 days, we also have a $10 special with the same criteria as the free ads however those ads may be placed in person and will run for 14 days. This is a pre-paid charge and non-refundable.

Run Till it Sells Auto Special:
Auto ads can be placed to Run Till It Sells for $75 or the ad may be placed in both the Johnson City Press and our sister paper the, Kingsport Times News, for $100. The ads will be 5 lines long and include a photo. They will run every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for 30 days. The customer must call in after 30 days and renew the ad (at no charge) and reduce the price of the vehicle. This is a pre-paid charge and non-refundable.

Handyman Special:
A business may place a 4 line ad in the Professional Services section for only $40 for a week, $119 for a month or $199 for a month in the Johnson City Press & our sister paper The Kingsport Times News. This is a pre-paid charge and non-refundable.

Early Bird Yard/Garage Sale Special:
Yard/Garage Sale ads placed by 12:00 noon on Wednesday qualify for the Early Bird Special. When purchasing 2 days the 3rd is free. The ad appears in the Johnson City Press on Thursday, Friday and Saturday which gives maximum exposure. This is a pre-paid charge and non-refundable.

Will my ad appear online?

Yes, all classified ads appear on our website, johnsoncitypress.com as well as our sister paper's website, timesnews.net for 7 days.

Are Lost & Found ads free?

Johnson City Press will run a 4-line ad for 5 days at no charge as a public service for any found items. There is a line ad charge for lost items.

What is the circulation of the Johnson City Press?

What types of ads are not accepted?

Johnson City Press does not accept advertising for Massage Parlors, Escort or Dating Services, Personals, Abortion Clinics, Fortune Tellers, Lotteries (except state lotteries) and Bingo. Also ads requesting advanced payment or deposits are not accepted. Singles Clubs ads must be submitted for prior approval.

Terms of Payment & Agency Commission.

A. Agency Commission: National rate is commissionable to recognized advertising agencies. The agency commission is 15%
B. Terms Of Payment: Commercial advertisers may establish credit by submitting a credit application prior to placement of an advertising schedule. Without approved credit, advertising is cash or credit card with order. Mastercard, Visa and Discover are accepted. Advertising orders from outside the local area, without a credit application on file, may be required to be paid in advance via cachier's check. All billed advertising is due and payable within 20 days from date of invoice. The Johnson City Press reserves the right to refuse to accept any advertisement from any advertiser whose account is in arrears.
Advertising becomes past-due if not paid on or before 20th of month following month advertisement ran. A charge of one and one-half percent (1 1/2%) eighteen percent (18%) per year, applies on all past-due balances as of 10 A.M. on our last business day in month. Saturdays and Sundays do not constitute a business day. Postmarks, check dates, etc. are deemed inconclusive proof of payment, therefore only payment receivied, in hand, are considered.
All local advertising rates are non-commissionable.

CLASSIFIED LINE ADS

Line advertising is set in light face type. While 6.5 point type is standard, white space and large typefaces are available.
Minimum ad size is four lines.

ELECTRONIC TEARSHEETS

Electronic Tearsheets are available for all ads published in the Johnson City Press on the day following publication (please contact the Advertising Department for instructions on accessing electronic tearsheets). Actual paper tearsheets, if available, an be furnished in reasonable quantity at a cost of $2.00 per tearsheet.

AFFIDAVITS

Affidavits are available for ads published in the Johnson City Press following publication (please contact the Advertising Department to request an affidavit or inform them of the need when the ad is placed). There is a cost of $5.00 per affidavit.

Policies, Contract & Copy Regulations

ALL POLITICAL ADVERTISING is payable in advance and must include disclaimer.

The Johnson City Press reserves the right to reject or edit any copy submitted.

PROOFS: When proofs are furnished, it is only for the correction of errors or deviation from copy. When changes from the original copy are made, or when additional copy and art are added, or where size of an ad has been determined and part of the copy is yet to come, all time spent on such revisions will be charged at the rate of $20.00 per hour net. All reasonable position request will be met if possible. Position must not violate standard rules of makeup.

REPRODUCTION: All property rights, including any copyright interest in any advertisements produced for advertiser by the Johnson City Press, using art work and/or typography furnished or arranged for by us, shall be the property of the Johnson City Press. No such ad or any part thereof may be reproduced without the prior written consent of the Johnson City Press.
Any ad which has been scheduled and held out will be held 30 days at which time it will be billed at one-half the cost of the ad had it run.
Only standard and commonly recognized abbreviations may be used in in-column line advertising. No display advertisement of less than one column inch will be accepted.

ERRORS: In the event of a typographical error by the Johnson City Press offering the merchandise at less than the proper price. This newspaper can assume no liability in the event the merchandise is sold at any incorrect price. When corrections must be run for errors in advertising on the part of this newspaper, only the space occupied by the item in which the error appeared will be allowed. Claims for corrections must be reported to this newspaper within 24 hours after the date of publication.

All advertisements pertaining to prize contests must be submitted and approved by the local United States Postal Service or other controlling authorities before acceptance for publication.

PREPAYMENT Johnson City Press has several types of ads where payment before publication is required - Mobile Homes For Sale, Cards of Thanks, Responsibility Notices, Happy Ads, Garage Sales, Home Improvement, Pets, Self Employment or Jobs Wanted, Memoriams and other ads as indicated by the Inside Sales Manager.
Ads concerning Magazine Sales must state so in the ad.

ADVERTISING PLACEMENT: Classified ads are not guaranteed position within a classification. Display ads will be placed as near as possible to the classification ordered.

FLOOD, FIRE: In the event of flood, fire, strike or other emergencies beyond the control of either party, contract shall be suspended by agreement and the Johnson City Press nor the advertiser held liable for damages.

GENERAL PROVISIONS: Johnson City Press is not responsible for repro materials not called for within thirty (30) days after publication. All property rights and copyright interest in advertisements, materials and proofs produced are retained by the Johnson City Press. Advertising set to resemble news matter must carry the word "Advertisement" in the top right corner of the ad. News typefaces will not be used for such advertisements.
No ads will knowingly be misclassified for any reason.

The publisher reserves the right to change the terms, conditions, and rates upon thirty (3) days written notice. If the changes are not acceptable, the advertiser may terminate the agreement upon the date of change without penalty.
