Alabama Supreme Court halts gay-marriage licenses

The Alabama Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the state's probate judges to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples, saying a previous federal ruling that gay-marriage bans violate the U.S. Constitution does not preclude them from following state law

A former Washington County Sheriff's investigator wanted a suspect to "confess his sins to somebody, particularly me," in order to get the statement needed to prosecute the man, according to the officer's testimony at a suppression hearing in November.
